Free Britney: Jamie Spears Agrees To Step Down As Conservator

Free Britney: Jamie Spears Agrees To Step Down As Conservator

The pair have been locked in a bitter conservatorship battle.

Jamie Spears will stand down as Britney Spears's conservator.

Britney's father has been in charge of the popstar's estate since 2008, after Britney went into psychiatric care.

Jamie's lawyer has filed legal documents that will see him removed as conservator "when the time is right."

"There are, in fact, no actual grounds for suspending or removing Mr. Spears as the Conservator of the Estate ... and it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears' best interests," the statement reads.

"Nevertheless, even as Mr. Spears is the unremitting target of unjustified attacks, he does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests. So, even though he must contest this unjustified Petition for his removal, Mr. Spears intends to work with the Court and his daughter's new attorney to prepare for an orderly transition to a new conservator."

It then reads: "Regardless of his formal title, Mr. Spears will always be Ms. Spears' father, he will always love her unconditionally, and he will always look out for her best interests."

Jodi Montgomery is the conservator of the singer’s personal affairs on what technically remains a temporary basis.

Britney's lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, has since responded to the news. He was recently appointed by the pop star, 39, after she stringently battled for new legal representation.

"We are pleased but not necessarily surprised that Mr. Spears and his lawyer finally recognise that he must be removed. We are disappointed, however, by their ongoing shameful and reprehensible attacks on Ms. Spears and others," he told TMZ.

"We look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter's estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears's sworn deposition in the near future. In the interim, rather than making false accusations and taking cheap shots at his own daughter, Mr. Spears should step aside immediately."

Britney's battle to be free from her conservatorship gained huge traction earlier this year following the New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears.

The one-off documentary explored in great detail the events that led to the Toxic singer's well-documented breakdown, as well as the conservatorship she was fighting to take control of.

#FreeBritney was soon trending across the world, with many celebrities also urging for the star's wishes to be respected.

Britney herself since took the stand in court on an earlier occasion, begging for judges to listen to her requests. "It's not OK to force me to do anything I don't want to," she said. "The conservatorship should end. I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive.

"I am not happy, I can't sleep. I'm so angry, it's insane. And I'm depressed."

While she is yet to comment publicly on the news, Britney posted a video of herself dancing on her Instagram page earlier today.

"You can see the last dance in red top I’m very hesitant when dancing but letting go is freedom !!!! I’m not sure exactly why I’m being so cautious ... it might be my left foot that was broken talking to me!! You can tell when I turn but hopefully I will let go thoroughly and follow through soon!"

Tyla has contacted legal reps for Britney for comment.
