Patients at a children's hospital in Leicester have been given electric cars so they can 'drive' themselves to surgery rather than being wheeled on a trolley.

Going for surgery can be quite daunting for kids, but these cars can help make that journey to the operating theatre a little bit easier to handle.

The five electric cars were donated to Leicester Royal Infirmary by a local Volvo dealership, Sturgess Motor Group.

There's a Volvo, Jaguar, Range Rover, and even a mini Fiat 500 for the children to whizz around the wards in.

Xander Devonish, five, has been loving the XC90 model during his stay in hospital, and has been cruising around the corridors of the hospital, while spending the day on the children's ward while waiting to have a tonsillectomy.

His Mum, Cass Devonish, 38, from Leicester, said: "I think it's fantastic, it allows children to think of something else before an operation.

"The children have no idea what they're going to be like after surgery. It's given the children a whole new lease of life. Xander was over the moon, he was really chuffed.

"He played in two of them, they were super fast! He drove to theatre in the Volvo as the Jaguar was a bit too fast.

"To be able to drive it to the theatre, it allows the parents mind to be taken off what's happening.

"I wish it had been introduced previously, for anybody in there to see the kids driving round it would've been great.

"Instead of doing Secret Santa it'll be great to donate more to the cause. It was a complete surprise for us, I didn't know it was going to happen. It was lovely."

Upon completion of their MOTs, all of the cars will be rolled into operation enabling children to travel to surgery in style.

A Matron from the University Hospitals of Leicester has said that although they do everything they can to make patients enjoyable, they don't always succeed so they began thinking of new ways to improve their experience.

Chairman of Sturgess Motor Group, Chris Sturgess said "The Children's Hospital at Leicester Royal Infirmary have taken care of members of the Sturgess Family.

"This was one way we felt that we could give back.

"It was an honour to deliver the five electric cars to the children in an attempt to make their experience less daunting whilst going to theatre."
