Gingerbread houses made from actual gingerbread can move over, as it's another food's time to shine in 2020.

Yup, we're forgoing the gingery, spicy sweet Christmas treat in favour of a savoury dish that's guaranteed to be the star of the dinner table this festive season.

Savoury gingerbread houses - or 'charcuterie chalets' as they're more aptly known - have taken over Instagram and they're incredible AF.

The delish invention is made up of a series of meats, such as prosciutto ham or salami, different cheeses and crackers creating stability for the walls. Plus, some even include added veg or olives as an extra treat.

But there's really no rules for creating this fun festive snack - the more creative and inventive, the better.

Though technically 'charcuterie chalets' have been around since 2016, the food trend is really gaining traction this year and we can see why.

Imagine bringing this one out at parties. Guests will love it!

So, how do you make this incredible festive snack?

Instagrammer @thecheesefluencer made hers using three types of cheese as well as Calabrese salami for the roof.

Creator Michelle wrote in her post: "I've been loving the #charcuteriechalet trend and nervously decided to try one myself. (My past gingerbread house quests have been among the worst on the internet). Turns out cheese and meat is way more fun, plus I had so much inspiration from the others I've seen."

Michelle used a pre-made gingerbread house as the base, cream cheese and parmesan for the realistic looking snow, aged white cheddar for the siding and Calabrese salami for the roof.

The door and walkway are made from crackers and sliced almonds and the windows from pretzel snaps.

Michelle has even gone so far as to add little details such as rosemary and pomegranate seeds for decoration, a snowman made from Babybel, pine nuts and a carrot, and firewood made from pretzels. We love it!

And how incredible is this one, made using pomegranate seeds as Christmas lights, spreadable goats cheese as the snow and a breadstick roof? Not only that, but this one's got a salami chimney too.

As creator @petalandplatter so aptly puts it: "Because gingerbread houses are so 2018."

Meanwhile, a meaty roof is accompanied by a thyme wreath, rosemary Christmas trees and lots of crackers in the below chalet.

Just look at how cute the tiny wreath is?

"The house is made with crackers and breadsticks, all supported by cream cheese," the post, by Instagram user @photosoritdidnthappen reads.

Meanwhile Nicole from Farm Curious has gone all out on the details in her charcuterie chalet, with added nuts and seeds, some broccoli trees and ham roses lining the walkway.

What a creative invention!

BRB, we need to give this one a try for ourselves!
