Olly Alexander responds to fans calling out his first Eurovision performance

Olly Alexander has spoken out following criticism of his Eurovision performance in Sweden on Tuesday evening (7 May).

Appearing on ITV's Lorraine on Wednesday, Olly discussed his Eurovision experience and the backlash he received after his performance in the semi-finals.

The final for year's Eurovision - which is being held in Malmö in Sweden - will take place on Saturday.

But ahead of the final and Olly unfortunately received some criticism over the performance of his song, Dizzy, at one of the semi-final shows.

One person wrote on X: "Poor olly alexander, awful performance… hope he steps it up for the weekend he’s shaky, volume is low and his tone isn’t great."

While another said: "Olly Alexander needs to work on his vocals by Saturday if the UK stands any chance of being on the left side of the #Eurovision leaderboard! Phenomenal staging and imagery, but very shaky vocals."

And a third added: "Poor performance, especially the vocals."

Olly addressed the criticism while appearing on Lorraine, discussing how he had a broken mic pack during the performance.

"This whole Eurovision experience is wild," he explained.

"Last night was amazing. It was the first time performing in the arena and on TV. It was just... yeah, it was amazing. I had a slight wardrobe malfunction - my mic pack fell off - and had to improvise but that's fine.

"It's live TV, it happens."

Lorraine was quick to reassure Olly and make him feel better about the performance, adding: "You did so, so well with that. I think a lot of people - I noticed it - but I think a lot of people wouldn't have noticed that the mic came away.

"So you're having to adapt, so well done on that. And also, what a naughty performance I'm glad to say! I thought it was fantastic - those dancers! They are just fantastic!"

Despite some criticism, many fans were loving Olly's performance and expressed their excitement for the final.

One wrote: "Olly alexander i love u. phenomenal in it’s a sin and wonderful in music."

While another said: "OLLY ALEXANDER I LOVE YOU I AM CRYING."

And a third added: "Already welling up - I love Olly Alexander so much."

The Eurovision Song Contest final will air on Saturday 11 May at 8pm on BBC One. The show will be hosted by Graham Norton and Dame Joanna Lumley.
