People Are Saying Home Alone Is Best 90s Christmas Movie Of All Time

It's that time of year when it's *almost* acceptable to start watching Christmas movies. With so many festive films to choose from, now might actually be the time to start making a shortlist of ones to watch.

A new poll by Ranker.com has seen people voting for their favourite 90s Christmas movie, and Home Alone has come out at number one. Yes, the Christmas comedy film, released at the start of the decade in 1990 and starring former child actor Macaulay Culkin, is the top choice and therefore one you should definitely add to that shortlist.

For those of you who have yet to see it (and you should have, it's a classic!) Home Alone, directed and produced by John Hughes, tells the story of Kevin (Culkin), an eight-year-old boy, who must defend his (rather large and bougie) home from two burglars after his family accidentally leaves him behind when they go on a Christmas holiday.

The cast also includes Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as the two burglars, as well as John Heard and Catherine O'Hara.

Since its release thirty years ago, the film has become a Yuletide favourite and is often shown on multiple times on TV at this time of year.

The film also became a franchise, spawning a 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which is the only Home Alone sequel to feature most of the main cast. It's in fourth place on Ranker's list.

There have been five Home Alone films in total, and there is a sixth currently in development, which will be a reboot of the first film. Filming was interrupted in March this year by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic but it still appears to be set to premiere on Disney+ next year.

If Home Alone is not exactly what you are looking for when choosing something to curl up on the sofa with a blanket and mug of extra festive eggnog, perhaps one of the other films in the top 10 might suit your needs.

In second place is The Santa Clause. Starring Tim Allen, the 1994 film is about an ordinary who accidentally causes Santa Clause to fall from his roof on Christmas Eve. After doing 'the right thing' and completing Santa's deliveries, he and his son travel to the North Pole where he is told he must now become the new Santa.

Christmas movies have notably been both light and funny but can also be gritty and adventurous. Perhaps something a little darker, like Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas a stop-motion dark fantasy romp through an imaginary world of creatures and misfits, could be more to your liking. It's in third place.

The Top 10 can be found below:

1. Home Alone

2. The Santa Clause

4. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

7. A Christmas Carol

8. Miracle on 34th Street

9. Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too

10. Jingle All the Way

The 1999 adaptation of A Christmas Carol starring Patrick Steward and Dominic West, is also is top pick.

Miracle on 34th Street is the first theatrical remake of the original 1947 film, and starred Mara Wilson - who you may recognise from her part in Mrs. Doubtfire and the titular role in the fantastic adaption of Roald Dahl's Matilda.

Who knew the 90s were such a great decade for Christmas movies?!
